FEATURED ARTISTRichard Staffell
Richard’s landscapes define his connections with his local roots; he reflects on the changing seasons in the borough with studies of locations that resonate with him.
I was born in Richmond, the youngest of three brothers. (I have a younger sister) We all grew up here, and have firm roots in the borough. My parents and my siblings are all engaged in creative pursuits of one form or another. After spending over twenty years working as a hairdresser, I discovered a profound new creative path in painting around fifteen years ago.
I spent two years at the Barnes Atelier, following their classical programme that has shaped my professional approach to the craft.
Embracing painting has been a deeply personal journey for me – one that lets me connect emotionally with Richmond, the riverside and the parks I grew up around.
Every scene I paint carries a piece of my story; I’m endlessly inspired by Richmond’s seasonal atmospheres and the changing light, and I want to share that affection and leave a permanent record of what it means to me.
I have a deep connection to my roots. Painting these landscapes isn’t just an artistic exercise, it’s my way of interacting with my home and inviting viewers into the moments that move me.
I have been an exhibiting member of the Richmond Art Society for close on a year, showcasing my landscapes in curated shows and galleries as I continue to expand my artistic reach.
My process is a traditional one, I only work in oils for the present; I like to work from life, as I find the spontaneity is an important part of the engagement in contrast to working from photographs.
Amongst the several things that characterises a particular painter – one, of course, is their colour palette; mine is an important part of my focus; it has been steadily evolving from the early days, and I continue to refine it. Viewers will notice the subtle changes in my progress…
I’m particularly drawn naturally to the impressionists, particularly Monet, and Sisley, and the contemporary painters Paul Brown, and the late Ken Howard.
I paint every day, and take the occasional commission.
