Catherine Ball
A ceramicist who ran a studio in Cheshire and co-founded The Potters' Gallery Conway, Catherine has recently turned her attention to porcelain work.
Catherine Ball operated a ceramic studio in Cheshire, supplying work to galleries across the UK. She co-founded The Potters’ Gallery Conway, a cooperative of 20 potters located at 1 High Street in Conway.
Her early work focused on high-fired reduction stoneware domestic pottery with richly coloured glazes, inspired by ceramicist Janice Tchalenko’s work at Dartington Pottery. “Achieving certain finishes, especially the reduction red took years to develop to an acceptable level.”
Catherine operated a workshop featuring two kilns and two potters’ wheels, offering weekly classes and summer courses alongside an adjacent showroom for exhibitions and custom commissions.
More recently, Catherine has shifted focus to porcelain work, citing Edmund de Waal’s book The White Road as influential. “Porcelain is more difficult to handle than most clays but I am getting to know it,” with recent pieces featured in Richmond Art Society exhibitions.
