Hugh Dalzell

Born in London and currently based in Richmond, Hugh pursued his long-held artistic ambition by beginning life-drawing at Putney School of Art under Annabel Cullen’s instruction. He subsequently enrolled in classes at Richmond Adult Community College and studied with several accomplished mentors including Jason Bowyer, Francis Bowyer, Sallyann Putman, and at Heatherleys Open Studio. His membership with the Richmond Art Society provided significant encouragement for his artistic development.

Hugh paints and draws daily, maintaining multiple works in progress simultaneously. He participates in the en plein air group from March through October, where he either initiates new pieces or continues previous work at different locations. His artistic focus encompasses landscapes, seascapes, and portraits. He emphasises relying on direct observation rather than photographic reference: “I want to communicate my idea and express visually my response to location, mood, memory and what I observe with my own eyes.”

His creative process involves continuous refinement — scraping back, revising compositions, and adjusting tone and colour as paintings develop. He maintains a disciplinary practice including weekly drawing sessions by the river and participation in a life drawing group. A significant professional achievement includes having work accepted and exhibited by the New English Art Club at Mall Galleries.
