John Brigden has maintained a lifelong commitment to visual art, driven by “a fascination with the awe and wonder of visual images and how they can make us feel.” His artistic inspirations include Romantic movement painters such as Samuel Palmer, Caspar David Friedrich, Andrew Wyeth, and David Inshaw.

Born in Taunton, John completed formal training at Somerset College of Art and Nottingham College of Art and Design. His career spanning education, government, and the arts included roles as art teacher, national curriculum developer, regional art adviser, Ofsted inspector, and assistant director for children’s services across the Midlands, Home Counties, and London.

In retirement, John creates small-scale intimate works exploring personal expression through landscapes, animals, and portraits rendered figuratively. His process involves careful planning through written notes, though he remains open to “both diversion and discovery” as work develops. He prioritises “conveying a sense of character, time and place and an intensity of mood or atmosphere” and may spend weeks or longer refining individual pieces.
